seems like someone would figure out to have a small water cooled gas engine that just pumps the water and heat from itself through a thermostat to the diesel to get the block hot before startup

This is why locos rarely get shut off. That is unburnt fuel coming out. That engine is showing decades of neglect. I am surprised it didn’t do a runaway and put a window in the block

I was an Engineer back in the 80's and went down the Amazon River. A Dehavland Beaver seaplane brought me in and out. Took a while to warm up that engine but once it was, it purred like a litten

It felt like I developed a symbiotic relationship during that start up.
